to discuss research strategy, timetable and division of labour. The workshop also discussed revision of the questionnaire to be sent to 800 state enterprises. Various draft papers were presented and discussed. In March. 1989, the 400 enterprises survey dataset was received from our Chinese colleagues. Processing and analyses of the data have been proceeding since then, with 8 draft papers prepared. These papers were presented at an international conference held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, in January 1990. The second database for 800 enterprises was received in early October 1990 and the processing and analyses of this database are currently proceeding.
C. Financial Reform Programme
A collaborative research project on 'Financial Reform in China' which is sponsored jointly by the International Development Centre, Queen Elizabeth House and the State Commission for Restructuring the Economic System, China.
The objectives of this collaborative project with the State Commission for Restructuring the Economic System are to identify (1) the main issues in China's financial reform using Western analytical methodology; and (2) lessons from international experience which may offer a guide in the resolution of these issues. Members of the Oxford team are: Mr. Christopher Allsopp, New College, Sir Alec Cairncross (project advisor), Professor Robert Cassen; Dr. Cyril Lin and Mr. Percy Mistry (International Development Centre, QEH). The initial phase of the project is being funded by the Ford Foundation.
D. Hong Kong Project
Sponsored jointly by the Rhodes House Library of the University, this project began in November 1986, with Dr. Steve Tsang as its director. Its objects are to secure research materials for and to promote the study and better understanding of Hong Kong.
The project received generous donations from various sources, including initially from the Centre itself, the Beit Fund and the Rhodes Trust. Subsequently, further support was received from Sir Q.W. Lee, Mrs. Richard Lee, Dr. J.S. Lee, the Hong Kong Bank Foundation, and Sir Oswald Cheung. The project also recently received a donation of £30,000 from the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club.
The collection of research materials includes the securing of written archives and oral histories. The written archives will comprise the private papers of retired civil servants and other distinguished individuals who have
