South Korea confirms aviation talks with China

(FE/1078 A3/4 [9]) The government confirmed on 22nd May that talks on opening a direct air service between Peking and Seoul are under way. Two Transportation Ministry officials and one Foreign Ministry official began three days of talks with Chinese communications officials in Peking on the 20th, the Transportation Ministry said.

Negotiations began when the Soviet airline Aeroflot asked China for permission to switch from Moscow-Shanghai-Seoul flights to Moscow-Peking-Seoul flights. Korca would not permit Aeroflot to change its air route unless China agreed to a direct bilateral air service, a Ministry official said

Indonesia to invite Sihanouk to Jakarta Cambodian meeting (Text) Indonesia will invite Prince Sihanouk, the President of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea, CGDK, to attend the Supreme National Council [SNC] of Cambodia meeting in Jakarta if he wishes to attend it. The Foreign Minister, Ali Alatas, said in Jakarta today (21st May that the Indonesian authorities had received information about Prince Sihanouk's wish to be present at the SNC meeting on 2nd-4th June The invitation to Prince Sihanouk will be dispatched soon but it is hoped that the Prince will not change his mind like he did on the previous Jakarta informal meeting on Cambodia in Jakarta. Malaysian Foreign Minister asks Japan to explain EAEG to USA The Malaysian Foreign Minister. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, arrived in Tokyo from Bangkok on 21st May for a three-day visit to Japan. Abdullah was to meet the Japanese Foreign Minister, Turo Nakayama, later that day to discuss bilateral and other issues, including the July meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers to be followed by a meeting of the group's "dialogue partners". The Malaysian Foreign Minister asked the Japanese Prime Minister, Toshiki Kaifu, on 22nd May to explain Malaysia's proposed East Asian Economic Group (EAEG) to the USA and other major industrialized countries, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told Kaifu that he believes the US is overreacting in its opposition to the proposed economic group. Kaifu told him Japan would make clear its position after ASEAN reaches a consensus on the EAEG.

During the meeting, Kaifu also took note of Abdullah's invitation to representatives from China and the Soviet Union to observe the opening session of the ASEAN foreign ministerial meeting, the official said. The two countries would

Vietnamese economics officials invited to Thailand (Facerpt) The Thai government has invited a delegation of Vietnamese economic ministers and top officials to visit Thailand in July. The event would represent the first highest level contact, specifically in the field of economics, between the two countries since 1975.

The Vietnamese delegation would comprise members of Vietnam's Council of Ministers responsible for trade and agriculture, and the Chairman of the State Committee for Cooperation and Investment, a national organization in charge of foreign investment.

Thai ambassador to Vietnam Suraphong Chaiyanam, who recently met the Vietnamese representatives, said the leaders had accepted in principle the invitation, although the plan should be submitted for approval to the Council of Ministers. Ambassador Suraphong said the move "is part of the Thai Government's policy fo promote bilateral economic cooperation."

The Thai government proposed the visit be held from 13th-20th July after Vietnam has concluded the seventh congress of the Communist Party, which was scheduled to be held before the end of next inouth.

Besides the economic ministers, Vietnamese delegation would include the Foreign Ministry's chief of economic affairs, and representatives of the Vietnamese Sea Prodex Company, which looks after fisheries. The Vietnamese team would meet Thai counterpart and members of the Thai private sector. They also will be taken to visit Thai industrial, agricultural and agro-industrial activities...
