Seminars have been held for major shipowning and

ship managing concerns in Hong Kong, and these are being

followed up by personal visits by Marine Department staff to

local shipping companies.

Number of Ships and Tonnage

21.

On 3 December 1990, when the new shipping register

commenced operation, there were 773 ships of 6.47 million gross

registered tons (GRT) on the register.

From 3 December 1990 to 28 February 1991, we have

registered 15 ships and the registration of a further 7 is

being processed. We have lost 35 of the ships transferred from

the original register, of which 13 were yachts. Such turnover

is not unusual. The original register experienced turnover of

more than one million GRT in a normal year.

As at 28 February 1991, there were 753 ships of 6.05

million GRT on the register.
