MR KUNIO TAKAHASHI

1.

Mr Takahashi, the Japanese Embassy's China/Hong Kong watcher, called on me today for an introductory chat.

2. By way of follow up to this meeting, I should be grateful if you could let me have:

a)

Statistics on UK investment in Hong Kong showing the extent to which it has grown in recent years

(Mr Takahashi had a copy of statistics provided by the Hong Kong Department of Industry, showing that invest- ment had fallen; we do not accept these figures).

b)

A table showing the extent to which law and order in Hong Kong has improved over the past decade and that it compares favourably with law and order in other Asian cities.
