STATISTICS ON UK INVESTMENT IN HONG KONG

1. I have encountered considerable difficulty in obtaining statistics on UK investment in Hong Kong. DTI are aware of the figures which Mr Takahashi possessed, but point out that they related only to UK investment in Hong Kong's manufacturing industries and do not take into account the considerable British portfolio investment in Hong Kong. DTI do not have any useful statistical information on investment but sent me the attached press cutting.

Unfortunately there is also great difficulty in assessing the extent of the portfolio investment according to DTI and I see from our files that when we last tried to arrive at a figure for British investment (Heap's teleletter of 1 June 1990) we were forced to rely heavily on information from major financial groups, eg Swires and Jardines. I have highlighted the relevant sections of the teleletter.

Should we require more specific information then I recommend we ask HKG to provide it.
