This Convention regulates a convenient scheme to

reciprocal judicial assistance in the taking of

evidence for civil and commercial proceedings. Because of

Hong

Kong's

wide-ranging international

relations

it

is

essential that parties to litigation both in Hong Kong and

access to necessary evidence speedily and

abroad be given

conveniently

to

resolve

disputes and situations

satisfactorily.

In the years 1986 to 1990 a total of 590

inward requests were received in Hong Kong, rising from 59

in 1986 to 166 in 1990. Statistics on requests made by

Hong Kong are available only since July 1989. Between July

December 1989 there were 5 requests and in 1990 there
