(d) to encourage, recommend, coordinate and, as appropriate, undertake training and extension activities in all aspects of fisheries;

to encourage, recommend, coordinate and, as appropriate, undertake research and development activities;

to assemble, publish or otherwise disseminate information regarding the living aquatic resources and fisheries based on these resources;

(g) to carry out such other activities as may be necessary for the

Commission to achieve its purpose as defined above".

(v) Area of competence

The South China Sea and adjacent waters up to the outer limits in the zones in which its member countries claim jurisdiction over fisheries, as well as in regard to common stocks occurring also in contiguous waters.

1/ At its Nineteenth Session (Kyoto, 21-30 May 1980), the Commission agreed

that the functions of the South China Sea Committee should not affect those already entrusted to the Special Committee on Management of Tuna in the Indo-Pacific area. This will not prevent the South China Sea Committee from concerning itself with development aspects, the harmonization of national policies among coastal countries in the South China Sea or the preliminary consideration of management measures with respect to tuna stocks occurring in its area of competence
