Dear David:

He was

On Friday 21 June, out of the blue, I received a call from John Ni inviting me to tea and a chat about his current interests. very pleased that you and Robbie were able to provide a visa at short notice for his 2 day trip to the UK.

He held meetings with a Mr Paul who is responsible for the Hong Kong Desk and he seems optimistic that his application to replace the present Head of the Taiwan Travel Centre in Hong Kong will be successful in due course.

The second area of interest he mentioned was the proposal by China Synthetic Rubber Co, a subsidiary of Taiwan Cement, to purchase the Glaxo penicillin plant in Newcastle. Apparently the Head of Taiwan Cement was in London finalising details of the proposed purchase. John told me that the Taiwan offer was more attractive to Glaxo than others from European firms as it secured continual production at the site and the employment of the workforce. This proposed purchase $ was mentioned in the FT on 12 June and today I received a press cutting from you referring to this project so I assume it is now common knowledge. A figure of £20 million was mentioned which may. make this one of the largest acquisitions in UK by a Taiwan firm. One of many to come I hope.

Yours sincerely
