Qian Qichen interviewed on his departure European tour (Excerpts) Foreign Minister Qian Qichen left Peking by air this morning [21st February] for visits to Portugal, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, and Malta... Speaking to Chinese and foreign journalists shortly before his departure at the capital airport, Foreign Minister Qian said: "China has always enjoyed very good relationships with European countries... I am very glad that this visit will provide me with an opportunity to get first-hand information about new developments and new issues since the great changes in the situation in Europe. I am also prepared to take this opportunity to explore further, with the leaders of all these countries, new ways and prospects for strengthening China's relations with Europe."

Answering a Portuguese reporter's question on bilateral relations between China and Portugal, Foreign Minister Qian said... Three years ago, China and Portugal signed a joint declaration on the question of Macao. Since then, bilateral relations have developed smoothly.... I hope that my visit to Portugal will achieve fruitful results.” Answering questions on China's relations with the Eastern European countries, Qian Qichen pointed out: "We enjoy traditional friendship and cooperation with Eastern Europe. We maintain that some of the major changes which took place in Eastern Europe two years ago are issues of the people in the various Eastern European countries making their own choices. We respect the choices made by these people, hence I do not believe that there are any obstacles to expanding relations between China and the Eastern European countries. Chinese statistics delegation visiting Cuba Chinese statistics delegation led by Zhang Sai, director of the State Statistical Bureau arrived in Cuba on 16th February. During the visit, the delegation held talks with Fidel Vascos, Minister president of the Cuban State Statistical Committee, and other Cuban officials, and exchanged views with them on statistical work in China and Cuba and on how to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field. Vietnam and France sign agreement on customs and training Vietnam and France have signed a document on customs, personnel training and technical equipment assistance.
