Date

1. 512 Specialist Team Royal Engineers (512 STRE) undertake precise surveys using the latest satellite fixation method. This is a satellite survey system which fixes points on the earth's circumference by reference to the position of satellites with known positions. General land survey work is also done.
2. The team plans to visit Hong Kong in the first half of this year and would like to visit Macao afterwards. They visited Macao ten years ago, when their survey methods were less accurate, and offered to make a subsequent visit in order to provide more precise data. It is routine practise to offer the host country these survey data at no cost, and they are always gratefully received. The team is self funded and self contained, ie they will not require any assistance from their hosts. They will not wear uniform (unless requested to do so by the Macao authorities). Therefore, their military status need not be apparent.
3. The team leader, Major Duffus, would like to make a recce visit in mid-April. The team consisting of one officer and three or four senior NCOS would then visit during the second half of the year for four to six weeks.
4.
512 STRE are already in contact with the Hong Kong Survey and would make contact with Macao through the British Consulate in Hong Kong. I should be most grateful for your early agreement to what is proposed.
