[18] South Korea to urge North to be logical on reunification (Excerpts) President No Tae-u asked a group of South Korean lawmakers Thursday [25th April] to point out to North Korea when they visit Pyongyang next week [as members of the IPU delegation] that its unification policy is impractical and to offer a logical alternative. Reopening the suspended South-North Korean premiers' talks is of the utmost urgency, No said, suggesting he was now ready to accept Pyongyang's proposal that military issues be included on the agenda...
"Immediate unification is unrealistic considering the war experience of the past half century, built-up resentment and deep differences in system, ideology and culture,” No said. "North Korea insists national reunification is possible once the non-aggression pact that they insist on is concluded, but how is reunion possible when we cannot even agree to reunite separated families?"... "Point out to the North Korean authorities the impracticality of the North Korean unification policy," No told the lawmakers, stressing that adhering to principles is important for long-term inter-Korean relations. He asked the delegates to prepare arguments of "persuasive logic" to buttress South Korea's unification proposal, its appeal to the North to sign the nuclear safeguards accord, and its acceptance of the presence of US troops in South Korea. The successful formation and emergence of the single team symbolic of "one Korea" at the championships is a precious fruition of the patriotic stand of us who have made all sincere efforts in the past three decades to form and send unified teams to major international games. It is a victory of the line of collaboration and reunification our party and the government of our republic have consistently maintained and a victory of the pro-reunification forces...

the internal affairs of the nation on the altar of their political tie-up with outside forces and freeze division and, furthermore, to gratify their wild ambition for "unification by prevailing over communism". The South Korean military boss went the length unhesitatingly letting out an extremely provocative outburst against the North threatening to surprise and destroy its "atomic reactor facilities"... We wish the unified table tennis team will register fine results at the current championships and thereby display the nation's resourcefulness and honour to the whole world, demonstrate the might of national unity and greatly contribute to opening the door of reunification.
