1. Again many apologies for our delay in replying to your letter of 13 June to Alan Paul. As I confessed when I rang you this morning, I let it get buried while dealing with other urgent papers. (Alan Paul was in the Far East and the Section Head is on leave).
2. Let me confirm that we see no need to try to deflect any initiative from Macao for an agreement with the Community. As you say there is probably nothing in such an agreement for Hong Kong, but if Macao bid for one HKG could choose whether or not to follow suit. Despite our other political problems with Peking there is no reason why the Chinese should take different views of Macao's and Hong Kong's positions; nor would we expect them to do so.

3. Please let us know of any significant developments. HKG were to pursue the idea of an agreement we would have to inform the Chinese (in the Sino British Joint Liaison Group).
