Jiang's "Mr Clean" image was later further improved in an article in the People's Daily of

February 1990 which singled him out for praise for honestly

performing duties and not seeking personal benefit. His self-

less deed had apparently been to prevent his wife from

accompanying him on a trip to France.

functioned as the number two to the Governor in recent years.

10 1988, it was reported that he assisted the Governor in the

administration of the overall work of the local government, sharing responsibility for the control of planning, goods and materials, finance and taxation, statistics, public security, administration of justice, civil affairs, and maintaining con- tacts and coordination with the provincial People's Court,

Procuratorate, Armed Police and armed forces. It was presumably through this liaison role with the security apparatus that it fell to him to be one of the provincial leaders who engaged in discussions in May 1989 with local students who supported the

demonstrations in Peking. He seems to have been relatively successful in avoiding serious disturbances in his province, and

certainly suffered no career ill effects from the confrontation.
