I attach a cutting from SCMP 1 October on the death of

Ke Lin.

2. Ke Lin was known and respected in Macau as the long time head of the Chinese (Kiang Wu) Hospital. He was also a close friend of Li Peng's father and well known to Li Peng. His younger brother, usually known by the Cantonese romanisation, is Or Qingping (Or and Ke are different pronunciations of the same character). Or was head of the Nam Kwong trading group

So too, to his partial embarrassment, was Ho Yin, the intermediary most trusted by Macau's governors and the only ethnic Chinese to be awarded the freedom of the city of Macau.

It is interesting therefore that 2 of today's players in the drama that is forever Macau are Edmund Ho (Vice President BLDC and Legislative Assembly and Ho Yin's son) and Ke Xiaogang (NCNA Vice Director for Foreign Affairs, Ke Lin's son and or Qingping's nephew).

Or himself, incidentally, was alive and well when I last saw him at the Governor's Camoes (National Day) reception. He is still an adviser to the NCNA.

I had lunch with T S Lo on 30 July and afterwards dictated the attached record. It perhaps comes across as a little more sinister than it seemed at the time; the various comments on intelligence and other matters were fairly widely scattered during the course of quite a relaxed lunch. Nonetheless I imagine that you, and others to whom I am copying this, might find them of interest. You will be aware I am sure that T S Lo is a Cambridge-educated lawyer who at one time was close to the Administration and Government House here, but then in an abrupt switch transferred his allegiance to China saying that that is where the future of Hong Kong lay. TS Lo presumably assumes that I will pass anything of interest that he tells me back to the FCO. He may not assume that I share it with the Hong Kong Government.
