Worked in the Asian Department of the MFA. During this time he dealt with numerous visits of Heads of State and attended ESCAP meetings in Bangkok and Manila. In November 1979 he was a member of the party accompanying Deng Xiaoping on a visit to S.E. Asia and he similarly accompanied Huang Hua to S.E. Asia in

The article (of which I attach a copy) describes Chen's

accomplishments during his service in Fujian, including

supervision of public works projects and dealing fairly with popular complaints. It also says that during his spare time

while in Thailand he wrote studies on the Thai Royal Household

and on the Chinese community in Thailand, and that he has translated several books into Chinese, i.e. the following titles

(which presumably reflect Chen's diverse interests) :

Secret War, Black People's Fairy Stories, Swiss Family

Robinson, and Foodstuffs of the Future.
