HONG KONG: CO-OPERATION WITH CHINA ON CRIMINAL MATTERS
Problem
Α
1.
The Secretary of State commented on our earlier submission that he was not entirely happy that there would
be no check in London on action taken by Hong Kong to
provide information to China to assist with prosecutions. He asked whether there was any scope for the Foreign Office or the Home office to be consulted on a case by case basis.
Recommendation
B
2. I recommend that we should not seek to become involved
in each case but that we should establish a system with the Hong Kong Government whereby they consult us in advance on cases which they consider could cause political controversy.
The Home Office have been consulted and do not wish to be
involved. ERD and UND are content.
