Dear Mr Furness,

Following discussions with Mr Lars Christensen of International Conference Services, Copenhagen and Mr Martin Kinna, London, I have been advised to seek your assistance in the following matter:

AIBD is holding its annual conference and general meeting on May 16 and 17, 1991 in Hong Kong. Our principal guest speaker at the conference on Thursday, May 16 is Professor Abel G. Aganbegyan, Academician (Full Member) of the USSR Academy of Sciences and in his present position Rector of the Academy of National Economy.

Although Professor Aganbegyan was advised that it would take some time to obtain his visa, the matter was delayed, probably also due to his heavy travel schedule; and the visa has still not been granted although we have been in contact with the Financial Secretary, Sir Piers Jacobs in Hong Kong, asking for his assistance as well.

As the progamme of the conference with all speakers listed has had quite some advance coverage in the international financial press, it would be rather embarrassing should Professor Aganbegyan's participation have to be cancelled at the last moment due to his not being able to receive a visa into Hong Kong. This occurrence might also not augur too well for any financial conferences that might be planned in Hong Kong in the future.
