Dear Robin,

Thank you for your kind invitation to attend the concert and supper which is being organised by the Anglo-Hong Kong Trust and sponsored by Hutchison Whampoa at the Festival Hall on 11 February in the presence of HRH Princess Alexandra.

I would have very much liked to come. But as I am sure you appreciate, developments in the Gulf make my diary rather an uncertain document at present. As David Lidington may have mentioned to you, there is also a possibility that the Anglo-German Summit might be held on 11 February. In the circumstances I am afraid that I must therefore decline. Judy would very much like to come alone if this suits. And of course I know that Malcolm Caithness would be delighted to come.
