BID TO INTERVIEW SECRETARY OF STATE : RADIO TELEVISION HONG KONG

Problem

How to respond to a bid from Sally Blyth of Radio

Television Hong Kong to interview the Secretary of State.

Recommendation

2. I recommend that the Secretary of State should agree to

give an interview. HKD, FED and SEAD concur.

Background

3.

Sally Blyth is travelling to London to cover the

Governor's forthcoming visit. Against a background of

continuing difficulties the content and timing of this

particular visit is likely to arouse enormous interest in

Hong Kong. Taking advantage of her presence in London

Ms Blyth has asked to interview the Secretary of State on

three main themes:

(i)

UK relations with China

(ii) Hong Kong airport

(iii) Vietnamese migrants.

The interview would be for broadcast on RTHK's programme "Hong Kong Today". With a wide and influential audience of expatriate and local Chinese listeners this is the Hong Kong
