HONG KONG STANDARD : BID FOR INTERVIEW
Problem
1.
How to respond to a bid from the Hong Kong Standard (HKS) for an interview with Lord Caithness.
Recommendation
2. I recommend that Lord Caithness agrees to give the HKS
an interview. Hong Kong, FED and SEA Departments concur.
If the Minister accepts the recommendation I suggest about 20 minutes would be appropriate; it could take place at
1500 on Tuesday 9 July.
Background
Look out for it
3. Ms Vivian Tse came to London originally to cover the
Governor's visit. In advance she bid for an interview with
the Minister to cover the airport and Vietnamese migrants.
4. In the event the proposed timing of the interview (early last week) made it impossible. I spoke to Ms Tse on Thursday and she asked if it would now be possible to interview Lord Caithness - the subjects would remain the
same.
5. Post the announcement of the Memorandum of Understanding the need to avoid the press has gone. More positively it seems to me there would be value in having the Minister on the record specifically in Hong Kong at this time.
