As I mentioned on Friday, we have been reviewing the remaining extra vernacular transmissions agreed because of the Gulf War.
In the case of Tamil, we propose that the last Sunday transmission will be that which went out on 24th March.
We propose ending the additional 1015 GMT Persian Service transmission on Friday 12th April. We would be interested to know if you have any feedback from the post in Teheran about this transmission. We have some evidence that this was a good time to be on the air just before a major Teheran Radio bulletin - and we shall be trying to assess over the next few months whether this time might do us good business in the longer term.
As far as our additional Sunday broadcast in Nepali is concerned, we have had very positive reaction from BFBS in Hong Kong as well as from Nepal. As you know, the Nepali Service is regularly rebroadcast for the benefit of the Gurkha battalions in Hong Kong. BFBS have agreed to increase their payment for this service and as a consequence, we are now in a position to mount the Sunday broadcast regularly without any substantial additional cost to the BBC. I am writing to ask, therefore, whether the FCO could formally approve an increase in the Nepali prescription by 20 minutes per week, making 2 hours and 20 minutes in total. This would be particularly timely with the general elections in Nepal due on 12th May and would meet widespread listener demand for a daily service.
