CHINA/HONG KONG

1. As you know, the Minister very much enjoyed and found most stimulating his conversation last week with Mr Hay Davison. The meeting has prompted Lord Caithness to consider organising a lunch for a group of senior businessmen, officials and others with interest in China and Hong Kong. The purpose of the occasion would be to brainstorm about the region, discussing likely long-term developments there, both political and economic, and what Britain should be doing in the widest political and commercial sense. Lord Caithness would be looking for new ideas, long-term thinking and original perspectives.

2. Lord Caithness mentioned the idea to Mr Hay Davison, who was enthusiastic. Mr Hay Davison would certainly be a candidate. Another name that springs to mind is that of Lord Young.

The Minister envisages a lunch, or just possibly

a dinner, at Lancaster House for 12-20 guests.

3. The Minister would be most interested to hear your views, and those of copy addresses, and for some suggestions for guests.
