55. Citizens of the Republic of Ireland. If you are a citizen of the Republic of Ireland you must be naturalised as a British citizen so that you can be issued. with a British passport for travelling to and from RAF units abroad.

Methods of Entry
56. a. If you are entering university, college or polytechnic direct from school, you may make a direct application for a cadetship at the begin- ning of the academic year prior to entering university or college.
b. If, having left school, you decide to read full-time for a degree, your application should be submitted as long as possible before your course begins, but not more than one year before the start date.
C. If you are already studying for a first degree see Section II.
Applications
57. You can obtain an application form (RAF Form 7153) from any RAF Careers Information Office (see Annex C) or any member of the RAF Schools Liaison staff. The completed form is to be returned to the Office or Liaison Officer from whom it was obtained. You are urged to return it near the begin- ning of the academic year preceding that in which you intend to enter univer- sity or college; in fact, you may find it convenient to submit it at the same time as you submit your UCCA form. The normal closing date for receipt of appli- cation is 31 December. Exceptionally, later applications will be accepted but no guarantee can be given that the application will be processed before the start of the next academic year.

(1) If you experience any difficulty in completing your UCCA form, particu- larly as to which type of course is most suitable for you and especially if you intend to offer yourself for the Engineer Branch, you are invited to seek advice in writing from the Cadetship Staff Officer at Headquarters University Air Squadrons at the RAF College Cranwell (see Annex C).

The Undertaking
58. You will be required to give an undertaking to repay to the Ministry of Defence the sum paid to you in respect of the education element of your emoluments and all tution fees and any other sum expended by the Department in connection with your cadetship (basic refundable) in the event of your failing to graduate through lack of diligence, misconduct, or medical unfitness due, in the opinion of the Secretary of State, to your own default or, exceptionally, being permitted premature voluntary release before graduation or during your first five years of full-time service after graduation. The parent or guardian of applicants who are under the age of majority (18 years) will be required to sign a similar undertaking to cover the period until he reaches the age of 18 years. Applicants who are not resident in the UK will be required to obtain a guarantor domiciled in the UK who will guarantee the repayment of all sums referred to in this paragraph. It should be remembered that the Undertaking which you sign is a financial bond in respect of your
