Great care has been taken to make future expansion uncomplicated and cost efficient.
For example, the Phase One processing terminal is designed to easily allow expansion on its north and south ends. Because of the modular construction, the terminal can accommodate up to two more building bays on each end and still provide the same level of efficient passenger service and convenience.
The phasing of the road system is also important to a cost-effective design. Almost all of the Phase One road-ways can be used in Phase Two with minimal service disruption and construction staging and few temporary roadways.
In the future, bigger aircraft with substantially larger capacities will be brought into service. The apron layout has been planned to accommodate the proposed Boeing 747-500, the largest aircraft foreseen at present. Design provisions have been made to double the capacity of each boarding lounge sized for 747-400s by adding a mezzanine waiting area.
This strategy provides future flexibility and projected capacity without requiring expansive facilities in the interim.

Concession Area and Opportunity For Enterprise
Concession space is located throughout the passenger terminal for passenger convenience and revenue generation. Because of Hong Kong's long established reputation as a centre for commerce and a mecca for shopping, concessions will be an important aspect of the image of the terminal.
Ample areas have been provided for a wide variety of shops, restaurants, bars, banking and money exchange facilities and a host of other passenger services.

Air Quality
The overall design and layout of the new terminal ensures minimal adverse effects on air quality due to entrapment of vehicle emissions. No vehicular tunnels are called for and underpass structures are kept to a minimum. Data from simulated test models show figures well within air quality objectives.

The Passenger Terminal complex at the new Hong Kong International Airport will be a facility like none other. The unprecedented convenience afforded passengers by its fully integrated land and sea based transportation system will establish Hong Kong International Airport's terminal as the most "user- friendly" in the world.
Purpose-designed-and-built to serve one of the globe's busiest air travel centres, it will be a benchmark achievement and a yardstick against which all other airport terminals will be measured for decades to
come.
