In my minute of yesterday, I said that the press were desperate for news. Today's enquiries so far provide further evidence I have been asked to confirm the following Hong Kong stories:

(iii)
that we have reached agreement with the Chinese to resume talks next week (Reply no date yet set)
that Mr Burns is visiting Washington to discuss VBP's and will visit Hong Kong en route (Reply no plans to visit Washington)
that HMG are telling HKG to be less obdurate in their approach to the Chinese - for guidance
(Reply - also for guidance - typical HK rumour which should be discounted).
There will, no doubt, be more. I will keep you
informed.
