MAJOR HONG KONG PROJECT WORK: BRITISH INTERESTS

1. I thought that it would be useful to bring you up to date with thinking in London as we move into the next phase of the tendering for the main airport contracts.

2. First, could I say that Ministers are taking a very close interest indeed in the project and the opportunities for British business. They are keen for reassurance that the opportunities are being pursued vigorously. Hence all concerned here are most grateful

for the full and detailed briefings you have been providing, and for your excellent reporting on the more political aspects of trying to ensure that British companies do well. The DTI will be responding to the specific points in your OTTER 169, but as a general response we found it most helpful. A considerable effort has been mounted here as well as at your end to ensure that companies are aware of the opportunities; and while the focus thus far has been on the big firms, this is now being extended through the DTI's sub-contracting
