tu morandum of under- stasiding' for a new Hong Kong airport, signed on Tuesday by Prime Minister John Major and Chinese premier di Peng froes the way for construction of 19 linked projects totailing 1IKSP7 000M ($7461M). The memo randum guarantees that China will not interfere in any way with the construction or operation of these projects known collectively as the Airport Core Programme.

It also sets out guidelines on consultation needed between the Hong Kong government and China before possible future associated projects can start after Hong Kong ceases to be a British colony in July 1097.

These are the 10 projects in the airport programme:

CHEK LAP KOK AIRPORT

Cost: HK$43 600M (53364M) Finance 30% IK government, 61% private sector for services, cargo, catering etc.

Description Two runways built on 1275ha of partially reclaimed site. Terminal and handling for 80M passengers/year and 33Mt cargo. First phase includes ons runway and facilities for $3M passengers/year. LANTAU FIXED CROSSING Cost HK$12 100M (5931M). Finance. IK government, plans to recoup cost from private sector by selling operation franchise for toiled crossing

Description: Overall ikm crossing Including two bridges and viaduct between Lantau and Tsing Yi islands. Tsing Ma suspension bridge: 2km long with 1377m main span Kap Shul Mun bridge: three span. 601m long with 440m main span Viaduct over Ma Wan island. Struc- tures are all two level with six lane

expressway over twin track railway. Tenders invited. July 1991 for Tsing Ma bridge. Approx value HK$6000M ($386M). October 1991 for Kap Shul Mun bridge. Offered as design build contract.
