LORD CAITHNESS VISIT TO HONG KONG, 28 JANUARY-1 FEBRUARY: PADS: BBC RELAY STATION
1.
Lord Caithness asked to be reminded of the current position on the new BBC relay station in Hong Kong that may be affected by the new airport at Chek Lap Kok. I attach the two relevant telegrams FCO telno 2447 of 31 December 1990 (together with the press article), and Hong Kong telno 153 of 15 January.
2.
In brief, the high intensity radio transmission area (HIRTA) of the relay station, situated at Tsang Tsui on the Hong Kong/Chinese border (ie some way from the airport), may interfere with ground aircraft communication at Chek Lap Kok. Greiner and Maunsells, HKG's airport master plan consultants, are studying the problem but their present view is that the HIRTA would impose constraints on designing safe approach/departure flight paths.
3. Greiner and Maunsells' brief requires them to make a firm recommendation on the problem by 4 March.
