NOTICE

New Airport at Chek Lap Kok

Site Preparation Contract - Notification for Prequalification

As you may be aware, the Government initiated studies for the Port and Airport Development Strategy which would meet the forecast port and airport traffic growth in Hong Kong well into the next century. The Government has selected a Strategy which includes a new airport at Chek Lap Kong on the northern coast of Lantau Island which lies to the west of the main Hong Kong Island. The design of the airport is still being developed but will have two runways and be on a site of about 1200 ha. It will have the initial ability to handle annually up to 30 million passengers, 145,000 aircraft movements and 1 million tonnes of cargo.

Chek Lap Kok Island is about 280 ha. in area and will provide some of the material to infill the sea between Chek Lap Kok and Lantau Island after dredging, to create the footprint of the new airport. The island will be reduced to an elevation of about +5m and provide approx. 85 million bank cubic metres of shot rock and overburden fill. The balance of the filling, which will be in the order of 60 million cubic metres will be available in marine sand borrow areas. The volume of marine deposits to be dredged and disposed off site is about 70 million cubic metres.

The Provisional Airport Authority proposes to invite tenders from prequalified contractors for the dredging and for the excavation and placing of the filling material from both the land and marine sources.

A notice has been placed in the Government Gazette on 15.3.1991 inviting prequalification of tenderers. A copy of the notice is attached for your information.
