You may have seen an English-language press report

of a recent statement by Li Peng calling for faster

completion of SHENZHEN Airport.

This was based on a

report datelined Shenzhen 28 February published in the

Hong Kong WEN WEI PO of 1 March.

The Wen Wei Po report said that Li Peng had

issued the following "new instruction" concerning the

airport :

"Construction work must be speeded up, and

by September test flights must be begun".

According to the same report, 530 million Yuan had

already been expended, representing over half the total planned investment. Runways, taxi-ways and hangars had

already been built, and work was now proceeding on the

internal fitting out of the latter.
