Hong Kong's new

Al.

The Chinese Government agree that Hong Kong needs a new airport. This was made clear by Premier Li Peng to my Right Hon Friend the Member for Warwickshire North (Francis Maude) when the latter visited China in July 1990. Experts from China and Hong Kong are now discussing details of the project. We are hopeful that these discussions will make it possible for the Chinese Government to support the project.

Q2.

Will my Right Hon Friend inform the House what steps are being taken with the Chinese Government to stop the flow of Vietnamese boat people coming by land from Vietnam, across China and then to Hong Kong.

A2.

Both we and the Hong Kong Government are in regular contact with the Chinese over this problem. We are able to give them details of the routes taken. The Chinese Government have assured us that they treat this matter seriously and take all possible action to stop such movements.
