Pergau HEP (1988-1991)

In 1988 Schroders was appointed to advise the joint venture between Balfour Beatty (a BICC company) and Cementation International (a Trafalgar House company) on its contract with Tenaga Nasional Berhad for the design, construction and installation of a 600MW hydro- electric power station at Pergau in the State of Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. The contract was awarded in January 1991 for a total sum of M$1,823.5 million (approximately £400 million) and a sub-contract has subsequently been entered into with GEC Alsthom for the supply of electro-mechanical equipment. Schroders negotiated a £305.4 million soft loan, supported by ECGD and ODA, to finance the UK/EC portion of the contract. The loan, which is the largest soft loan for a single project provided by the UK to date and which was syndicated among thirteen banks, bears interest at 0.809% p.a. and will be for a total duration of 14 years.

Kuala Lumpur Telecommunications Tower (1989 to date)

Schroders is advising Wayss and Freytag on its proposal to construct a communications tower in Kuala Lumpur, on negotiation of the concession, the related leases and construction contract, on the financial structure and on the raising of private equity and debt to fund the project.

Kuala Lumpur Sewerage Scheme (1989 to date)

Schroders is adviser to Arab Malaysian Development Berhad on the negotiation and financing of a privatised sewerage scheme for Kuala Lumpur.

Titanium Dioxide Plant (1989 to date)

Schroders is financial adviser to Tioxide Group Plc (owned 50% by ICI Plc and 50% by Cookson Plc) on the financing of its £120 million titanium dioxide plant to be located on the east coast of Malaysia in Trengganu.

Kuala Lumpur Garbage Disposal (1989 to date)

Schroders has been appointed by a leading Malaysian company to provide financial advice on a privatised scheme to dispose of the domestic refuse collected within the city of Kuala Lumpur. This M$50 million project is expected to involve construction of and operation of a sanitary landfill site.

Syarikat Teratai K G (1990)

Schroders has been appointed by Syarikat Teratai to advise it on the restructuring of its Concession Agreement on the Kuala Lumpur Toll Roads and Interchanges Privatised Project following a change of tolling policy by Government after commencement of operations. Schroders will advise Syarikat Teratai on its financial restructuring to accommodate these changes.
