In response to the growing importance of brand name development for Hong Kong industry, which is increasingly moving away from reliance on Original Equipment Manufacturing, the TDC launched a long term Brand Name Campaign in October 1990. This was designed to promote branding as a vital marketing method and raise awareness of how to effect it successfully.
The Campaign opened with a seminar called "Brand Names Work Wonders", which attracted an audience of over 500 manufacturers. Representatives of leading brands explained the success of their particular labels. This was in conjunction with an exhibition at the Hongkong Bank concourse, featuring more than 200 local branded products. This exhibition was repeated the following month at Ocean Terminal, where it attracted considerable attention.
In 1991 the Campaign was set to continue with three further seminars, providing "hands- on" advice on all aspects of developing and marketing brand names. In addition, the TDC has an ongoing policy to give regular exposure to Hong Kong brands in its own publications as well as popular media outlets. Successful labels will also be highlighted at special exhibits in overseas and local trade fairs, as well as store promotions.
