THE HONG KONG TRADE DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL
Established in 1966 to promote and develop Hong Kong trade worldwide, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council is a statutory organisation with a global network of 33 overseas offices and a staff of some 700.
The HKTDC implements a worldwide programme of trade promotion activities each year.
In 1991, the HKTDC organises, sponsors or participates in more than 240 promotional events, including high-profile trade fairs, product exhibitions, trade missions and seminars.
The

HKTDC provides business information to Hong manufacturers and exporters as well as overseas buyers and investors. Its overseas offices are directly linked to a massive databank at the HKTDC's headquarters, offering on-the-spot trade enquiry services around the world. Details of more than 47,800 local manufacturers, importers and exporters and 176,000 overseas buyers are stored on computer and updated regularly.
In 1990,
the HKTDC handled more than 271,000 trade enquiries, 125,817 of which were from overseas. This represented a 21.7 per cent increase over 1989.
In enhancing international economic co-operation, the HKTDC organises high-level business missions to and from Hong Kong. hosted more than 350 such delegations last year.

Through its secretariat in Hong Kong, the HKTDC maintains close ties with 19 overseas associations around the world, all striving to expand business links and improve bilateral trade with Hong Kong.
The HKTDC's research department provides the latest market data, industry statistics and product study information. It regular
produces market reports, analyses consumer trends and maintains the HKTDC's library which is stocked with reference books, magazines and newspapers, trade directories and clippings for public reference. The HKTDC also runs four specialist libraries covering fashion, design, electronics and China trade.
The HKTDC's publicity department disseminates information on the Council's activities Hong Kong trade and business developments to local and overseas media. Through computerised electronic mail, the department releases special reports on major events in and industry. It also extends assistance to local and
journalists covering the territory's trade.

Each year, the department publishes 12 specialised trade periodicals, promoting Hong Kong trade and products such as toys, timepieces, apparel and jewellery. More than two million
copies publications are distributed worldwide, most of them
of these
free of charge.
