To ensure such an outcome, China and the United Kingdom must undertake proper preparations and work to- wards a smooth transfer. Japan strongly hopes for further efforts in this area by the Governments of China and the United Kingdom. Japan, for its part, intends to strengthen its efforts appropri- ate for ensuring Hong Kong's lasting prosperity".
As mentioned in Mr. Kaifu's address, the Japanese Government attaches importance to Hong Kong's continued prosperity after 1997, not only for the sake of the Territory itself, but also for China and the Asia-Pacific Region as a whole, and intends to make efforts to ensure Hong Kong's prosperity.

In conclusion, I would like to make one request of Hong Kong. One of the main reasons behind Hong Kong's current state of prosperity lies in the entrepreneurial skill and hardworking nature of Hong Kong people. However, in order to perpetuate Hong Kong's bright future as a centre of distribution, finance and information in the Asia-Pacific Region, the Territory must not be slack in maintaining the "Fascinating Hong Kong" tag.
