The Baroness was also the driving force in getting for Hong Kong the world-class convention and exhibition centre it so badly needed, the Council member added.

Her Majesty The Queen laid the foundation stone for the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre in 1986, which the Prince and Princess of Wales officially opened three years later. The Centre is considered the leading facility of its kind in Asia.

The HKTDC Chairman-designate, Dr. Fung, has a long record of service as an adviser to the Hong Kong Government and promoter of Hong Kong as an international business centre.

Dr. Fung is considered an excellent choice to guide Hong trade development strategies into the 21st Century. His expert knowledge of the economic relationship between Hong Kong and Southern China is internationally respected and will be a particular asset to the HKTDC.

Dr. Fung is an active member of the Hong Cooperation Committee, a high-level forum for business ties between the two trading partners.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Fung began his career in the Corporate Banking Group of Citibank, New York. After three years as an Assistant Professor at the Harvard Business School, Dr Fung returned to Hong Kong in 1974 to join the trading firm of Li & Fung, where he was Group Managing Director for six years.

In 1989 he and three partners co-founded Prudential Asia, the Asian investment and merchant banking arm of the Prudential Insurance Company of America.

Dr. Fung is a member of the Hong Kong Government Public Service Commission, the Government's Central Policy Unit and the Advisory Committee to the Securities & Futures Commission. In 1988 he was awarded the order of the British Empire (OBE) for his commitment to public service.

He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Doctorate in Business Economics from Harvard University.

Hong Kong Trade Development Council Executive Director Mr. Jack So said that Dr. Fung had been for many years been a personal friend and staunch supporter of the HKTDC.
