1. Our limited resources and our widening range of responsibilties mean that some things get left undone that ought to have been done. Also, sometimes I am very unsure whether it falls to us, or to the HK administration, to report some events. I have not hitherto reported on the Hong Kong Forum, which took place in October, for both reasons.
2. In case the HK administration did not report it, perhaps I should place on record that the event took place and let you have the enclosed conference papers which provide the more important details. The HK Forum was an offshoot of the renowned World Economic Forum which meets in Davos each year. The October meeting was an attempt to bring together shakers and movers from around the world to focus on Hong Kong for a couple of days, together with a substantial turn out of the more prominent local residents, expatriates and Chinese, from the Governor down. To that end it succeeded. The organisers said at the end that they were sufficiently encouraged that they would plan to repeat the event in a couple of years time. The turn out was not as distinguished however as the Davos gatherings, and, at least as far as the residents were concerned, there was not a lot said that was new (but maybe that is asking the impossible). Many senior members of the administration were present. I was also invited and attended about half the sessions. As an exercise in education about Hong Kong and its issues, it was a success. As a forum for working out new solutions to those issues, it probably did not achieve a lot. Which probably adds up to a fairly useful plus.
