CALL ON THE SECRETARY OF STATE BY MR KEITH VAZ MP BCCI

1. The Secretary of State has agreed to see Mr Vaz, at the latter's request, at 0930 on Monday 9 September. I submit briefing.

2. Mr Vaz has recently visited the UAE and Hong Kong as Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group on BCCI. His primary interest is on behalf of the depositors, creditors and staff of the BCCI, and is aimed at securing the best possible restructuring deal with the cooperation of the Bank of England and the majority shareholders in Abu Dhabi. To this end he is likely to argue that we should take an initiative to regain the goodwill of Shaikh Zayed through a high level visit to Abu Dhabi.

3. Mr Graham Burton and I are available to attend the meeting if required.
