I have now returned to Hong Kong from a good holiday in Scotland - rather well timed too in that it meant I missed the worst of the BCCI affair and am preparing to take over from Sir Piers on 12th August.

I am just writing to thank you and your colleagues in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the chance to meet them, and of course Lord Caithness. I am sure it would be useful to keep up the tradition of an annual visit to keep in touch, so we know each other well enough to hopefully nip any problems in the bud.
