CALL ON PUS BY MR ROBERT KIMMITT, US UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR POLITICAL AFFAIRS: 4 JULY AT 6 PM

Mr Kimmitt's visit to London

1. Mr Kimmitt arrives in London tomorrow morning for G7 Preparatory meetings of Political Directors at the Stafford Hotel tomorrow evening and at Lancaster House on 5 July. (Mr Weston and Mr Powell, Planners, will attend on our side). The latter runs in parallel with the Sherpas meeting at Lancaster House on 5 July. Mr Kimmitt returns to Washington on the morning of 6 July.

2. I attach a CV on Mr Kimmitt which refers to his recent nomination as Ambassador to Germany.

3. He will be accompanied on this call by Ms Carol Van Voorst, Special Assistant and by Mr Mark Sigler, US Embassy.

4. We and the US Embassy see the call on the PUS as an opportunity for them to renew previous acquaintance and for the PUS to underline the importance we attach to resolution of differences with the US over Vietnamese Migrants (SEAD are providing separate briefing direct), MFN status for China and the lifting of US sanctions against South Africa.

5. The PUS might draw on the attached notes.
