Burmese military leader suggests that Aung San Suu Kyi leave the country

of the State Law and Order Restoration Council, said in a speech broadcast by Voice of Myanmar Television on 15th May that it had been “unavoidable” to detain Aung San Suu Kyi in 1989 for her own safety. Now, he said, Aung San Suu Kyi would be permitted to leave the country if she wished to be reunited with her husband and children. If she did so, it would be in the best interests of herself and the nation, he said. [1]

Meat rationing in Mongolia Meat rationing is to be introduced in Ulan Bator from 16th May, according to Xinhua News Agency. The ration is to be 2.7 kg a month. Rice, wheat flour, sugar and vegetable oil have been rationed since the end of last year, the agency added. [2]

China denies it sends prisoners to Africa A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman denied US allegations that China "exploited prisoners in labour service by sending them to Africa", Xinhua News Agency reported on 16th May. The spokesman called the allegation "sheer rumour-mongering”, and said China was "indignant” about it. [3]

China urges "prudent and proper" settlement of its trading status A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on 16th May urged the USA to settle the issue of China's most-favoured-nation status "in a prudent and proper manner" for the sake of the long-term interests of both countries, Xinhua News Agency reported. He added that China had "taken note" of President Bush's statement that he wanted to extend China's most-favoured-nation status for another year. [4]

Guido de Marco, president of the 45th session of the UN General Assembly, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Justice of Malta, will visit China on 24th-28th May, Xinhua News Agency reported on the 16th. [8]

Japanese vessel fired on by unknown intruder fishing boat from Ehime prefecture came under fire from a vessel of unknown nationality off the Senkaku Islands near Okinawa, NHK Radio, Naha, reported on 15th May, adding that the vessel was heading for Chinese territorial waters, and was being pursued by Japanese patrol boats. Solomon Islands Prime Minister cleared of misconduct charge (FE/1030 i [6]) Solomon Mamaloni has been cleared by the Leadership Code Commission of allegations of misconduct in office, which stemmed from his involvement in signing documents authorizing an Italian national to negotiate for an offshore loan of 250m dollars on behalf of the Solomon Islands government, Radio Australia reported on 16th May.

The Commission has also found similar allegations by the opposition against the Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Christopher Columbus Abe, unjustified. [10]

ministers China's State Council recently appointed three vicc-ministers and dismissed two, and replaced the vice- president of the national coal mine corporation, Xinhua News Agency reported on 15th May.* [5]

China concerned over South Korean oil prospecting Asked to comment on reports in some South Korean newspapers that the oil development company of South Korea was conducting offshore oil-drilling 310 km south-west of Kunsan, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said at the press conference that China had noted these reports and was concerned about the issue, Xinhua News Agency reported. He recalled that China's position on this issue had been clearly set out in a a Foreign Ministry statement of 15th March 1973. [6]

Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations to visit China Fernando Solana Morales will visit China on 23rd- 25th May, Xinhua News Agency reported on the 16th. [7]
