EC/ASEAN FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING, LUXEMBOURG, 30/31 MAY

AND 1 JUNE

REGIONAL ECONOMIC COOPERATION

OBJECTIVES

To encourage countries in the Asia-Pacific region to continue to pursue open economic policies by:-

(i)

(ii)

expressing support for regional organisations, like APEC and PECC, which encourage open markets;

discouraging any move towards inward looking trade blocs; (iii) encouraging efforts to find a way of admitting Hong Kong

to APEC.

POINTS TO MAKE

Welcome Hong Kong's admission into PECC at the recent

meeting in Singapore

-

believe that Hong Kong will make a

valuable contribution to the work and objectives of PECC.

Hope that Hong Kong might soon be admitted to APEC thank

ASEAN members for efforts made so far.

(If, as likely, EAEG is raised) welcome initiatives that encourage open markets and regional and global trade links. These need to complement the work of existing organisations

such as APEC and PECC.
