The Secretary of State was grateful for your minute of 9 July. He would rate the case for HMS Endurance higher than for the Belize garrison but lower than for Hong Kong patrol craft or the West Indies garrison ship. He is prepared to defend Endurance at this stage on the basis

of paragraph 6 of your minute (i.e. an off the shelf replacement if necessary), but not to advocate a new, purpose built, replacement.
