Withdrawal of the Hong Kong Patrol Craft: Q&A

Q1. When will ships leave?

Al. The date for withdrawal will be announced in due course.

Q2. What will happen to the ships?

A2. No decisions taken.

Q3. Hong Kong government own ships?

A3. Any proceeds from the sale of the patrol craft will be split between the Hong Kong government and HMG in the

proportions 75% and 25% respectively. If the ships are

retained in RN service, 75% of their assessed market value

will be passed to the Hong Kong government.

Q4. How many posts saved?

A4. The withdrawal of the patrol craft will save the posts of

some 70 RN and 40 locally enlisted uniformed personnel. In

addition there are likely to be savings in the number of RN

and LEP shore based personnel who provide support to the

patrol craft.

[IF PRESSED on redundancies:- RN personnel affected will be

redeployed elsewhere. The position on LEPS will be covered

when detailed plans are announced.]

Q5. Will the Royal Navy retain a presence in the Colony once

the patrol craft are withdrawn?

A5. The residual RN presence in the colony following the withdrawal of the patrol craft is still under consideration. In addition, it is the intention for HM Ships to pay periodic

visits to Hong Kong as a continuing demonstration of HMG's
