DEFENCE AND PUBLIC ORDER : WITHDRAWAL OF THE GARRISON

AM517

In previous discussions about the garrison the British side have explained their intention of withdrawing a battalion of the Brigade of Gurkhas from Hong Kong in 1992. At JLG VIII the Chinese side had expressed their understanding of this.

In accordance with this plan, the Ministry of Defence have now confirmed the decision to reduce the size of the garrison from four battalions to three. The withdrawal of the first Gurkha battalion will be carried out between April and September

1992. A public announcement will be made later this month.

The future of the Brigade of Gurkhas is a matter of

controversy within the United Kingdom. The British side would

accordingly be grateful if the Chinese side would treat this information as particularly sensitive.
