H.M.3. Endurance

As I am sure you will realise Falkland Islander are most concerned about the reports, both in the press and in the House of Lords Hansard of 12th. June, that H.M.8. Endurance may be withdrawn from service and not replaced.

We feel that to do this at this point in time will signals to Argentina as 1981/82.

At present we feel we are on the "slippery slope" which we were

on during the 1970's and this issue will add one more piece of ice to that slope.

I understand from Lord Shackleton's speech in the House of Lords that the Foreign Office was not consulted on the matter.

You, I am sure, can imagine that we are gravely concerned at this turn of events because of its importance to our future and to our peace of mind not to mention the important fole of Endurance in Antarctica.

We would appreciate it very much if you could pass on our concern to those who may make a decision.
