HONG KONG PATROL CRAFT

NPDD II April 1991

12 Liv

The Defence Secretary and the Foreign Secretary had a word this morning about the possibility of retaining the three RN patrol craft in Hong Kong until 1997 instead of withdrawing them in 1992 as currently scheduled.

There is no compelling military rationale for keeping these vessels. We could consider retaining them but only if the Hong Kong Government were prepared to make a reasonable contribution towards the extra costs that would fall to MOD as a result, I understand from officials that the next step will be for the Kong Kong Government to send representatives to the UK for detailed negotiations with MOD.
