(The most publicised incident) An operation to stop the

movement of stolen vehicles was mounted near Tap She Kok. A tug and

lighter with three stolen Mercedes Benz cars together with three crew

members and two undercover police officers eventually left a pier at Tap

Shek Kok. Three uniformed man (at least one armed) were also on board.

As they neared the Castle Peak Power Station police launches attempted to

intercept but were prevented from doing so by accompanying speedboats

which were believed to by CPVs. Near Black Point, about 3 km inside

Hong Kong waters, a CPV (Bin Kim 116) went alongside a police launch and

the return of the tug and lighter, cars and crew including police

officers was requested.

This was refused and the vessels eventually

berthed in China near South West Point. The police officers were

returned on the evening of 3 May, the three crew after lengthy

discussions, on 30 May and the cars on 31 July.

A report was received that a CPV with two accompanying

speedboats had intercepted a Chinese trading vessel loaded with

cigarettes near Lamma Island about 10 km inside Hong Kong Waters. Shots

were fired from the speedboats each of which had five or six uniformed

men on board, and the six crew members from the trading vessel one of

whom was injured jumped into the sea where they were picked up by an

escorting Hong Kong fishing vessel. The CPV whilst towing the trading

vessel was pursued by some Hong Kong speedboats, but shots were again

fired from the CPV speedboats and the chase was discontinued.
