Dear Mt. Major:
We are an organization of overseas Hong Kong Chinese professionals and students living in Massachusetts, U.S. We are very concerned about the recent denial of entry of fifteen Chinese students who had valid visas to enter Hong Kong to participate in the 2nd annual Global Chinese Students Union conference. Seven were deported while eight are still under detention at the Hong Kong International Airport, with no reasons given.
We are particularly disturbed to hear the circumstances surrounding the event. According to reports, the students were not permitted to contact cousel and friends and to make any phone calla before their deportation. Their luggage was searched by immigration officials without any search warrant and explanation. Documents, ncluding private correspondence, name cards and the namelist of the related organisations, were seized and photocopied.
We believe that these actions and the denial of entry to participate in a peaceful conference are strict violations of the students' rights of privacy, freedom of expression and assembly, much contrary to the spirit of the Bill of Rights just passed in Hong Kong (in particular, articles 14, 16 and 17). We urge a thorough investigation into these cases and that a full explanation be given to the public.
Thank you for your attention and looking forward to your reply.
Respectfully yours,
Christopher K.Y
