Dear Mike.

ED
I understand that you agreed, when you spoke to Nigel Cox the other week, that it would be useful for you to come to the UK on a Category II sponsored visit early next year. I think you said late January/early February might be a good time. That would suit us here very well.
A
We could fill your time profitably for about 3 days, which would include two with News Department and the Number 10 Press Office, as well as meeting other people in the FCO. day in the House of Commons would be useful. John Yaxley may well have some other ideas. Possibly the Press Office of another Whitehall department important to Hong Kong might be worth some time? No doubt, you will have some thoughts of your own.
The purpose of this visit would be to give you a good idea of the processes involved in news presentation here in London, and to see if we can find ways of improving the way Hong Kong stories play in the British media. As you know, we have an uphill task on this front, and it is not likely to get any easier in the years ahead.
Perhaps you could let me know which dates would suit you and any ideas you may have about the suggested programme.
